Fiber Matrix Technology™
TheraCell has developed a proprietary patent pending process to make fibers from bone and with those fibers, using textile processes to make a range of unique products. Bone is a living tissue. Bones have their own blood vessels and are made of living cells, which help them to grow and to repair themselves. As well, collagen, proteins, minerals and vitamins make up the bone. TheraCell’s demineralization process removes the mineral part of the bone that makes it stiff and this means that we can make flexible fibers from the bone. The other very important thing that removing the mineral does is to leave the proteins on the surface of the fibers. These proteins are responsible in bone for telling cells to make bone. This means that our fibers have these signaling proteins that will tell the healing site to make bone. This is known as osteoinduction.
In addition to being osteoinductive the Demineralized Bone Fibers (DBF™) in TheraCell’s Fiber Matrix™ products are osteoconductive . What this means is that cells can move easily in the material. The long fibers act as a “super highway” for cells to move along. Cells cannot jump and can only crawl so this is a very important benefit for our material.
Up until now there have only been products made from powdered demineralized bone available for veterinary surgery. While these materials are osteoinductive they do not provide osteoconductivity.
The fibers are like a cotton candy that the surgeon can easily handle and if he or she wants they can also mix with some of the patient’s own bone, known as autograft. VET Fiber Matrix enhances the use of autograft providing easier handling. Unlike powders VET Fiber Matrix will not wash out of the bony defect site where they are placed. VET Fiber Matrix is all natural and additive free.
